Change is a relatively new genre of comedy, recently popularized by the undertow. Hangover before the funniest films were divided into two categories: cartoon or realistic. Realistic comedies try to exploit the minutiae of everyday life and generally do not extend as far from reality. Cartoons put his characters in ridiculous situations, using almost anything and everything no matter how ridiculous, to make the audience laugh. Part of the reason the original worked so well hangover is doing a better job of finding the balance between these two extremes than any other film before, existing in a world we can all identify and relate to ... but it could have Mike Tyson Tiger is enclosed in a bathroom.
Change-Up continues this tradition better than any other comedy this year, and the story created this cartoon body enough yet to change the starting point to find the reality of daily life problems created by this piece of ridiculous. The Hangover as it did, it works brilliantly here.
Much more work of a genius in the change-up director David Dobkin has always know when to stop. The Wedding Crashers, which is tilted more realistic, made the main characters douchey enough to have fun with them, but douchey enough that we ended up hating them. This philosophy also applies here, when she married a man named Dave (Jason Bateman) wants to, could be free to take away life, and a man named Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) would not have to sleep and bang as many hot women. Bateman is usually better to play stiff and stilted, while Reynolds is loose and sarcastic. Nobody is particularly adept at mimicry so when they exchange their bodies, their differences in performance is minimal. Reynolds is best to try to take advantage of Jason Bateman and morals, but Bateman, despite efforts to the contrary, is still basically just Jason Bateman. You will not care.
That does not matter, because no matter who plays Bateman and Reynolds both devilishly fun insticts synchronize with a great performance. The change has at least three laughs eliminated by virtue of their performances alone. I must say that the script working here at the best, just average, but the direction of Dobkin and the actions that are incredibly talented actors of his story to an entirely different level.
This level is more than just fun, he's smart too. The film is anchored by another great performance from Leslie Mann, as Dave and his wife who has suffered years of neglect. There was a major stumbling block here, a little movie has turned the character into another one of those unfriendly Nags desperate for attention from her husband. Dave is a workaholic, and most of the conflicts between them comes from its absence. But the change-up is too good to go. Missing is the time when Leslie character threatens to leave if Dave has not stopped working, instead, a profound moment of honesty, she admits that her drive and determination is part of why she fell in love him, and concerns the same things she loves him will prevent him from ever being truly happy.
Change-Up is the most fun, intelligent and interesting. It is a film from Judd Apatow, is so poignant, but it deftly walks the line between comedy and on top of a nice way of subtlety plays a few others are able to do.
